Driver killed after fleeing Kenner police in high-speed chase
Crash into canal bank followed pursuit sparked by possible road rage with Mustang
KENNER, La. (WVUE) - A man is dead following a high-speed crash early Friday morning in Kenner after fleeing from police during what authorities believe may have been a road rage incident.
According to the Kenner Police Department, the crash happened just after 2:30 a.m., when an officer on patrol observed a gold Honda Pilot driving aggressively eastbound in the 2200 block of Airline Highway, possibly in a dispute with a red Ford Mustang traveling in the same direction.
The officer attempted to stop the Honda, but the driver reportedly refused to pull over and sped away, turning north on Taylor Street.
Police say the vehicle crossed West Metairie Avenue, launched over the curb and canal, and crashed into the north canal bank.

Officers removed the driver from the wrecked SUV and began CPR. Kenner Fire Department and East Jefferson EMS arrived and provided medical care, but the driver was later pronounced dead at an area hospital.
The Jefferson Parish Coroner’s Office identified the deceased driver as 26-year-old Elvin Santos Banegas.

Police are asking anyone who may have witnessed the incident or who can help identify the driver of the red Mustang involved to contact the Kenner Police Traffic Division at 504-712-2200.
